Q&A Le'Ron McClain

December 07, 2007|By EDWARD LEE

Le'Ron McClain registered his first career touchdown when he made a 13-yard catch against the San Diego Chargers on Nov. 25. But if the rookie fullback weren't playing football, his career path might have taken a different turn.

You were a human environmental sciences major at Alabama. What is that? It's like consumer sciences, stuff like pharmaceutical sales and computer stuff. I liked working with computers and all that. I'd love to work at the Apple store.

Who is your biggest inspiration? Seeing my mom [Gwen] work hard for me, working two and three jobs just to put clothes on my back and food on the table. She said she would go hungry just as long as we were eating. So that just gave me the motivation to work hard. Right now, I'm just getting to the point of working so that I can take care of her.

Were you easy on your mom when you were growing up? When I was in Indiana, I was. But when we moved to Alabama, I was giving her a little trouble when she first met my stepfather [James Robinson] because I didn't want him in the house. I was happy with just me and my mom. But he came in and I had to learn to love him and everything. That was the only time I really gave my mom any problems.

What's your favorite food? My mom makes this meal called shepherd's pie, but it's not really a pie. It's mashed potatoes on top of meatloaf with cheese on top of that. She made some for me when she was up here, and I froze it. I eat it about twice a week. That, with some homemade biscuits, I'll be good.
