I AM LEGEND -- (Warner Bros.) After years of false starts, Richard Matheson's influential novel finally comes to the screen. After a plague renders mankind into a mass of snarling, vampire-like carnivores, Will Smith is the last man left on Earth. But is he?

MARGOT AT THE WEDDING -- (Paramount Vantage) Nicole Kidman plays the title character, an opinionated writer attending the wedding of her sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and an unemployed artist (Jack Black). Directed by Noah Bambauch (The Squid and the Whale).

STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING -- (Roadside) An ambitious graduate student convinces a writer that her thesis can resurrect his career. With Frank Langella and Lauren Ambrose.

SLEUTH -- (Sony Pictures Classics) In a remake of the '70s thriller, an aging writer (Michael Caine) matches wits with a struggling actor (Jude Law) who has stolen his wife's heart.

THE WALKER -- (THINKFilm) An escort (Woody Harrelson) who caters to Washington's society women is caught up in a murder case.
