Videos To Jump About

December 02, 2007|By [MEREDITH COHN]

Have you been overindulging this holiday season? It's not yet New Year's but maybe it's time to start thinking about working off the gravy and pumpkin pie. There are plenty of new DVDs that can step, dance and bend you into shape. Here are some aerobics, yoga and pilates videos we found:

1. Bollywood Burn with Hemalayaa

Price:

$14.99

Where to get it:

acaciacatalog.com or pre-order on Amazon.com. Jan. 1, it will be available at Barnes & Noble in the Inner Harbor and elsewhere. 410-385-1709

Why we like it:

This is your chance to bring out your inner Bollywood star. Yogini and fitness instructor Hemalayaa talks you through the moves in three 15-minute sessions that get increasingly tougher. But the hip bhangra beat distracts you from the burning in your thighs.

2. Strong Body, Ageless Body with Erin O'Brien

Price:

$14.99

Where to get it:

acaciacatalog.com or pre-order on Amazon.com. Jan. 1, it will be available at Barnes & Noble in the Inner Harbor. 410-385-1709

Why we like it:

In the 1980s, this would be called aerobics. Today it's called a "total body workout." The instructor is good at explaining proper positioning and isn't judgmental about your abilities - the reason many of us shy away from the gym. She says, "If you can't keep up at first, that's great! You have something to work toward."

3. Eva Bondar's Maui Pilates

Price:

$14.99

Where to get it:

Amazon.com and Borders in Columbia and elsewhere. 410-290-0062

Why we like it:

It offers refreshing relief from the standard exercise video music. The instructor works out on the beach in Hawaii to the soothing sounds of the waves. Also, there isn't any jumping around. It's just you and your mat. The exercises are meant to stretch and build strength, rather than just burn calories.

4. Star Trainers' Ab Blast, Cardio and Strength

Price:

$29.96 for three (three for the price of two) or $14.98 each

Where to get it:

exercisetv.tv

Why we like it:

Each disc in the three-disc set produced by Exercise TV offers five workouts led by five different trainers, so there is variety in styles and workouts. You can do each video in order or mix and match to concentrate on an area. But they're challenging, so don't attempt all 15 at one time.

5. Michelle Dozois' Your Best Body Circuit

Price:

$19.95

Where to get it:

breakthrufitness.com, amazon.com and Barnes & Noble stores. 410-385-1709

Why we like it:

This is one high-energy video, with cardio and sculpting exercises. But it's suitable for those of us in peak and not-so-peak shape. Fitness instructor has a merry band of gals that go through seven programs lasting six to seven minutes each that target a different part of the body.
