Conservancy to hold holiday sale Saturday

The Howard County Conservancy will hold its holiday sale, with nature crafts and demonstrations, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at its headquarters, Mount Pleasant Farm, 10520 Old Frederick Road, Woodstock.

Master gardeners will demonstrate how to make topiary balls, wreaths and other natural holiday decorations out of ma- terials from the woods, garden and produce market. Included are whimsical creatures made from cones, pods and seed heads.

Pottery, soaps and candles, jewelry, nature and gardening books, children's books and puppets will be for sale.

Proceeds will benefit the conservancy's educational programs.

Travel funds -- Mark and Patty Carroll, who own Town and Country Auto Repair in Dayton and are alumni of Glenelg High School, are offering Good Neighbor Savings Cards that include discount coupons for two oil changes and other services. The cards, which are being sold by Glenelg students, are $20. The proceeds will help the school's marching unit and drill team to attend out-of-state competitions.

Trotter Road project -- A county water and sewer construction project will affect a 200-foot length of Trotter Road immediately north of the roundabout at Southwind Circle, beginning tomorrow. The area will be temporarily closed to traffic between 9:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed within six days. Suggested detours include Route 108 and Great Star Drive. Signs will be posted to advise motorists. 410-313-3440.

Citrus fruit -- The River Hill Music Boosters are selling Florida navel oranges, grapefruit, tangerines and variety packs. December orders are due Friday. Sales will continue through March. Order forms: www.riverhillmusic.org.

Waverly Mansion tours -- Historic Waverly Mansion, 2300 Waverly Mansion Drive, Marriottsville, will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 2 and 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 3 for holiday tours. A candlelight tour will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 3. Rooms will be decorated by garden clubs with fresh greens, and refreshments and music are planned. River Hill festival -- River Hill Community Association will sponsor a holiday festival, featuring breakfast or lunch with Santa Claus, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 8 at Claret Hall. Crafts activities with Santa's elves are also included. Santa will be available at 9:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Registration is required. The cost is $4 for River Hill residents; $5 for others. Dance revue -- The River Hill High School Dance Ensemble will present Winter Dance in Concert: A Musical Revue on Broadway at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 15 at the school. Dancers will perform a nonstop second act to tunes from classic Broadway musicals. 410-313-7120.
