Holiday Glows

November 25, 2007|By [KATY O'DONNELL]

Believe it or not, the holidays -- and holiday parties -- are just around the corner and it's time to break out your party attire. But looking your best at parties isn't just about the clothes; makeup puts the finishing touch on any chic look. The goal is festive, but still sophisticated. These favorites can take you from the office to the office party in a flick of the wrist:

1. Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Glimmer in Cultured Pearl

Price:

$13

Why we like it:

Cultured Pearl is a delicate eye shadow that adds a touch of holiday sparkle without making the whole look costume-y. The nearly nude shade brightens the eye area and covers imperfections on the eyelid without going overboard. A quick swipe of mascara and you're good to go.

Where to get it:

Sephora at The Mall in Columbia, 10300 Little Patuxent Parkway. 410-992-7700, sephora.com

Why we like it:

Sparkles are tricky -- it's too easy to go from "festive" to "tacky teenager," but Cultured Pearl manages to be both shimmery and sophisticated. Wear it alone with bold lips or layer it with other shadows for a dramatic eye -- either way, it's classy. An added bonus: Because it's from Bare Escentuals, a line of mineral-based makeup that's free of preservatives, oil, fragrances and talc, the powder won't irritate the skin around the eye.

2. Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush

Price:

$28

Why we like it:

For blush, powders are out and gel stains are in -- tired, dry looks have been replaced by more natural dewy glows that give skin a fresher appearance. Tarte's lightly fragranced best-selling cheek stain is a water-based gel without alcohol, so it doesn't irritate skin. Flush instantly warms up a pale winter face with a just-came-in-from-the-cold glow.

Where to get it:

Sephora at The Mall in Columbia, 10300 Little Patuxent Parkway. 410-992-7700, sephora.com

Why we love it:

The push-up gel stick is perfect to apply on the go, and it works on cheeks and lips for a quick look that's natural and youthful. Flush's hint of raspberry color is universally flattering and easy to blend, smoothing on as light or dark as desired.

3. The Body Shop Cranberry Shimmer Body Lotion

Price:

$16

Why we like it:

It isn't all about the face; dry winter skin needs a boost, and this shimmery lotion made with shea butter and sesame oil does the trick. The lotion's cranberry scent smells like Christmas, but doesn't hit you over the head with it, and the shimmer gives skin a nice sheen without being obnoxious or obviously sparkly.

Where to get it:

The Body Shop at Towson Town Center, 825 Dulaney Valley Road. 410-823-2540, thebodyshop.com

Why we like it:

The light, non-greasy lotion goes on smoothly and keeps skin soft all day. Unlike many fruity lotions, which have a tendency to smell sickeningly sweet, this one's fragrance is both sweet and tart, drawing from a combination of sour cranberries, green berries, blackberries, red currants, fruity cranberries, amber and grapefruit peel. The festive packaging also makes it a nice gift.

4. Bobbi Brown lip color in Cassis

Price:

$21

Why we like it:

Deep red lips, which were big at this year's fall fashion shows, spice up a holiday look with a touch of feminine '40s glamour. Cassis is a beautiful cranberry color that works well with most skin tones. With red lips and an understated face, you'll be elegantly festive in a matter of minutes.

Where to get it:

Nordstrom at Towson Town Center, 825 Dulaney Valley Road. 410-296-2111

Why we like it:

The semi-matte lipstick's creamy texture doesn't dry out lips. Plus, since it goes on relatively light, but deepens with added layers, it's perfect for those of us who aren't quite sure we have the nerve to pull off the deepest red. The best part: It brings instant polish to dull makeup -- perfect to apply before darting to a party after work.
