Hearing scheduled on road closing

The Harford County Public Works Department's engineering and construction division will conduct a public meeting tomorrow on the closing of West Medical Hall Road in Bel Air.

The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at the Harford County Department of Public Works, 212 S. Bond St., Bel Air, third-floor conference room.

Comments from the public will be received on the petition to close the road. Plats and/or plans for the proposed closing may be reviewed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at the department offices.

Deadline near to switch parties

The Harford County Board of Elections reminds residents that they have until 9 p.m. tomorrow to change their political party affiliation for the presidential primary election.

Voters may register with any of Maryland's recognized political parties, or register as unaffiliated with any party. To change affiliations, a registered voter can submit an application or written request to the Harford County Board of Elections, 133 Industry Lane, Forest Hill 21050; or call 410-638-3565.

Unaffiliated voters cannot vote in the 2008 primary but can vote in the general election. The presidential primary will be held Feb. 12 and the general election Nov. 4, 2008.

As of Oct. 30, Harford County had 59,097 registered Democrats, 58,472 Republicans, 18,054 unaffiliated, and 921 affiliated with the Green, Libertarian and other political parties.

Thanksgiving closings in county

Harford County government offices will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.

The Harford County Waste Disposal Center will be closed both days, while Waste to Energy will be closed Thursday and open Friday.

Harford Transit will be closed Thursday and operate on a limited schedule Friday.

Harford County Public Library branches will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday and remain closed Thursday and Friday.

Senior centers will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Public schools will close two hours early Wednesday and be closed Thursday and Friday.

County cracking down on DUI

Starting on Thanksgiving, the Harford County Sheriff's Department will have more deputies on the road to crack down on motorists driving under the influence.

The county has received a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office to run an operation called the Sheriff's Alcohol Violator Enforcement Detail, which will run through New Year's Day.

State money to fund open-space projects

The Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation has received state funding from the State Board of Public Works for two Program Open Space projects in the county.

The Darlington Acquisition property has been purchased for $487,000. The 11.5 acres will be used for a new community park, to include athletic fields, a parking area and a restroom. Work will begin next summer.

The state board also approved $200,900 for the expansion of the existing parking lot at the Jarrettsville-Fox Meadows Complex. The county plans to add 90 parking spaces, resurface the existing parking area, install ADA-compliant walking paths and remove an existing youth baseball diamond. Work will begin in the spring of 2008.

Thanksgiving dinner served

A number of Thanksgiving dinners have been planned around the county, including:

A SMILES Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday at the St. Patrick's Church hall on Pennington Avenue, Havre de Grace. Transportation will be provided and meals delivered upon request. Please call to reserve a meal by Wednesday.

Volunteers are needed to make deliveries starting at 9 a.m., and to help with serving and cleanup.
