Desirable Spaces

A million-dollar beach house in Essex?

Well, to be specific, this is Rockaway Beach, but the ZIP code lands it in an area that is commonly called Essex -- at least according to the post office.

Still, it doesn't matter where this house is located, because with magnificent views of three waterways, including the Chesapeake Bay, from just about every room in the house, it's obviously the perfect spot.

"Everything was built for this house with the view in mind," says Bob Rush, who along with his wife, Maryann, planned the home's construction from scratch. "In every room, we have a water view, even in the back of the house."

From the dining room, there's a view of the Eastern Shore, some 11 miles away.

From a bedroom at the back of the house, Sue Creek is visible. From the master suite, Middle River and the Bay can be seen. Even the shower in the master bathroom has a water view.

The couple purchased an older home and then tore it down to build their summer home. The Rushes, who do home remodeling as a hobby, worked with an architect to get the details just right.

Bob Rush says the elevation was key.

"We'd been looking on the waterfront for quite some time ... to find the right elevation," he said. "[This lot] never had a problem in any of the storms -- we don't even need flood insurance."

Completion of the home took about a year. During that time, the Rushes found another property close to Ocean City where they could practice their homebuilding hobby. Now, they plan to make that their summer home.

About the house --The house sits on a peninsula of sorts, which explains the three water views. It has a sunny, outdoor feel with 10-foot ceilings on the first floor, large windows, cottage white cabinets in the kitchen, rustic maple floors and a brick paver porch. All of the rooms are large and painted sunny yellow, including a huge master suite. "We used the yellow as a neutral. A lot of people use earth tones," says Bob Rush. "But we're beach people."

Address --717 Rockaway Beach, Essex, 21221

Asking price --$1,299,000

Size --Including the finished basement, the house has about 7,000 square feet of living space on four levels.

Features --The house has five bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths, all over-sized. The kitchen features granite counters and professional appliances, including a stunning red Viking stove. The lower level features an entertainment room and a tiled kitchenette with granite counters. Outside is a deep-water dock and a private beach.
