Varsity cheerleading teams from Atholton and Howard high schools placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the fall state cheerleading championship this week.

The team from North County High School in Anne Arundel County placed first in the competition, which was held Tuesday night at North Point High School in Charles County. The team from C. Milton Wright High School in Harford County placed second.

Eight teams competed.

Howard and Atholton advanced to the state championship after placing first and second in the south regional this month.

Atholton placed second in last year's state championship. This was the first time Howard High competed in the fall state finals since cheerleading became a varsity sport in the county in 2005.

"The girls worked really hard," said Howard coach Jodi Trumbull. "They're excited about coming back next year."
