North County and Chesapeake high schools of Anne Arundel County also advanced to the final round. The top four teams will compete against four north region high schools.

"We're excited," said Howard coach Jodi Trumbull. "The school doesn't even know the last time they won regionals. It's a big accomplishment."

Howard and Atholton qualified for the regional competition after placing first and second, respectively, in the county championships last week. Long Reach High School, which placed third at the county level, also competed at the regional tournament.

The state championship competition will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. at North Point High School in Charles County.
