COLLEGE PARK -- Dirt covered half of Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen's black windbreaker, and the knees of his tan pants were wet and smudged with dirt and grass.

He looked as bedraggled as his players, who trudged off the field after a 30-17 loss to Clemson yesterday covered in mud and slowly soaking in the fact that they are more than likely out of contention for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship.
