Motorcyclist dies in crash

A 24-year-old Carroll County man died yesterday after the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a pickup truck, Maryland State Police said.

Ian Baggett Jr. of Sykesville was traveling west on Liberty Road on his 1993 Harley Davidson about 1:15 p.m., when a 2000 Mazda pickup traveling east and driven by William Welsh, 82, also of Sykesville made a left turn onto Old Liberty Road in the motorcycle's path, said Trooper Rick Luzier of the Maryland State Police.

The motorcycle slammed into the front of the pickup, and Baggett, who was wearing a helmet, was knocked off. He was taken to Northwest Hospital Center where he was later pronounced dead, Luzier said.

Welsh was treated for minor injuries at the same hospital and released, Luzier said. There was no evidence that alcohol use or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
