School, playground to be dedicated

Harford County public schools will hold a dedication ceremony for the new Patterson Mill Middle/High School at 2 p.m. today.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new playground at Hickory Elementary School will be held at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Magnet program event set for Thursday

Harford County public schools will hold a presentation on the magnet program for eighth-graders at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Edgewood High School.

The Science and Mathematics Academy at Aberdeen High, the Global Studies/International Baccalaureate Programme at Edgewood High and the 19 career programs at Harford Technical High in Bel Air will be showcased in a video by Harford Cable Network.

Lecture will cap college's anniversary

Harford Community College's final 50th-anniversary event will be a lecture and reception, "The Next 50 Years," on Nov. 4 in the Chesapeake Theater of the Bel Air campus.

A presentation by William A. Draves, co-author of Nine Shift: Work, Life and Education in the 21st Century, will take place from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by a book-signing and reception from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

With music, slides and stories, Draves will discuss major shifts that society can expect in the Internet age.

The event is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance.

Harford Friends to hold open house

Harford Friends School will hold an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at its new location, the Highlands Common Building, 708 Highland Road in Street.

Visitors can tour the facility, learn about plans for next year's Lower School program, meet the teachers and learn about the school's philosophy.

The school incorporates an elementary school program based on state curricula, Quaker values and a hands-on approach to learning.

The school will hold admissions testing Nov. 17, Jan. 19 and March 15. Times are: grade one and grades six through eight, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; grades two through five, noon to 2 p.m. Appointments are required.

Child care provider conference is Nov. 7

"Self-Care is Not Selfish," Harford Community College's fall dinner conference for child care providers, will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Chesapeake Center on the HCC campus.

The keynote speaker will be Ginny Robertson, president of Live Your Life on Purpose, an organization that provides women with information and opportunities to help them lead richer, fuller lives.

Robertson will discuss the mindset of the "adrenaline junkie" - someone who is fueled by reactions to crises and deadlines rather than making conscious choices.

Other guest speakers will hold workshops.

Three hours of continuing-education credit in the area of professionalism are available. The $25 fee includes dinner, workshops and materials; Maryland Child Care Directors Association members pay $23.

Information-security test prep course set

Harford Community College is taking registration for the certified information systems security professional (CISSP) certification.

A test-preparation class provides information that information-security professionals need to succeed on the CISSP certification exam.

The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 12 to 16 at the Higher Education Center @ HEAT, Room 134, Aberdeen.
