VFW auxiliary sets lunch, bingo, bake sale

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 8097, 7209 Montevideo Road, Jessup, will sponsor a Bingo, Lunch and Bake Sale Nov. 4.

Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m.; bingo will be available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and the bake sale will go on until all the treats are sold.

Patuxent Center closed for repairs

The Patuxent Research Refuge's National Wildlife Visitor Center will be closed temporarily for repairs from tomorrow through mid-March.

The center's heating and ventilation systems are to be repaired.

The refuge's grounds and visitor trails will continue to be open from sunrise to 4:30 p.m., except certain weekdays Nov. 5 to 20, when the parking lot will be restriped and the entrance road repaired.

Visitors are advised to call ahead because repairs are contingent on the weather.

Holiday fair -- The South Laurel Recreation Council will hold its 32nd holiday craft fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 11 at Deerfield Run Community Center, 13000 Laurel-Bowie Road, Laurel. Artists and artisans will display and sell their work and accept commissions. Door prizes, refreshments, bake sales and lunch will be available. Registration will be open for the council's holiday workshops being held in December for children, teens, adults and families. Admission and parking are free. A free shuttle bus will run from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from the Towne Centre Shopping Center to the craft fair. Artists and artisans are invited to participate. The craft show is juried. 301-953-7882. Craft, vendor show -- The Savage Volunteer Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor a craft and vendor show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at the fire hall, 6925 Lincoln St., Savage. Lunch and bake-table treats will be available for purchase. The cost to exhibitors is $20 for an 8-foot table; two tables for $35. Proceeds will benefit the volunteer fire company's ladies auxiliary. At the library -- The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, invites those ages 13 to 17 to add their voices to an online newsletter written by teens for teens. Those interested in participating in "Teen 'Zine" will meet from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 7 at the library. Registration is not required. 410-880-5980. Registration is required for "Fun with Pumpkins and Gourds," a program for children ages 5 to 10 at the library. Participants can learn about growing pumpkins and see how to decorate them creatively and keep them fresh. The program will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, when Howard County schools are scheduled to be closed.

"Chanbara Excitement," a karate program with Kevin McMurtry, will be offered at 7 p.m. Nov. 20. The 45-minute program is for ages 6 to 10. Registration begins Nov. 13. 410-880-5978.
