`Stepping Out' teaches social skills to kids

The Long Reach Community Association is offering "Stepping Out," a six-week session of classes in self-esteem and social skills for children ages 8 to 13.

The classes will emphasize self-confident behavior; positive styles and attitudes; and appropriate manners.

Classes will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, this week through Dec. 15, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center.

The cost for the series is $150, with a 5 percent discount for anyone living on Columbia Association-assessed property.

Classes offered in martial arts

Long Reach Community Association will offer martial arts classes Jan. 8 through Feb. 28 at Stonehouse.

Classes in three-circle hapkido are based on movement along three circular planes to apply striking, joint-locking, throwing and pressing techniques against hand and weapon attacks. The technique draws on different styles of Korean self-defense and is influenced by other martial arts such as chen tai chi, aikido, jujitsu, bagua and mudukwan.

Classes for ages 5 to 11 will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; for those ages 12 and older, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $160 for eight weeks.

A 5 percent discount is offered to those living on Columbia Association-assessed property.

Seeking volunteers -- The A-OK (Assisting Our Kids) mentoring/tutoring program, a project of Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, is recruiting and training volunteer mentors and tutors to work in elementary and middle schools with individual children and small groups. Opportunities are available during school hours, after school and in elementary school homework clubs. 50+ Center -- The East Columbia 50+ Center, in the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer a Harmonize Exercise class from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. 410-313-7680.

O.H. Laster, a personal fitness trainer, will teach a fitness method called "Stamina, Strength, Stretch and Synergy." Registration is continuing. The cost is $3 a class.

Jesse Barnes, dancer and fitness trainer, will teach soul line dancing from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $4 a class. Wear comfortable clothes. and shoes. Registration is continuing.

Halloween -- Daisy the Clown will give three free shows at Amherst House in Kings Contrivance Village Center at a Halloween celebration planned for Tuesday. Performances are scheduled at 5 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Trick-or-treating in the village center is planned from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and includes a "haunted house" sponsored by the Hammond High School music department. 410- 381-9600.
