Miller Branch cleanup tomorrow

The Friends of the Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway Inc. is seeking volunteers for a cleanup tomorrow at the Miller Branch in Patapsco Valley State Park, off U.S. 40 in Ellicott City.

The group is working to remove trash and heavy items found in streams that flow into the Patapsco River. Communities and businesses in the Patapsco Valley area are encouraged to join in the effort to clean up streams flowing behind their buildings and properties.

Trees will be planted Nov. 10 along Grist Mill Trail in Patapsco State Park in the Avalon/Glen Artney section of the park.

Family Volunteer Day is Nov. 10

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will hold a Family Volunteer Day from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 10 to help clean and beautify Howard County parks and historic sites. The rain date is Nov. 17.

Volunteers will plant trees and flower bulbs, mulch and weed beds, work on trail maintenance and do general cleanup and other tasks.

Participants are asked to take work gloves and a canned good for the Howard County Food Bank.

Watershed panel looks for members

The Columbia Association is seeking volunteers for a Watershed Management Resident Advisory Committee, composed of 10 people with the experience, skills and desire to serve as advisers to the association on watershed management and initiatives.

The committee is being established by the Columbia Association's External Relations Committee, which has decided on watershed management as one of its key strategic initiatives in fiscal 2008.

Each village will have one representative on the committee.

Those interested should contact their village manager.

The application deadline is Nov. 15.

Course marshals sought for race Nov. 3

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is seeking volunteers to act as course marshals at the Harvest Harrier 5K Trail Race, for beginning and experienced cross-country runners, to be held at Rockburn Branch Park from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 3.

Domestic Violence Center needs help

The Domestic Violence Center, a local nonprofit agency providing services to women and children who are abused, is seeking volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to work with the organization's legal advocate coordinator to help clients petition the courts for protective orders. Training is offered, and legal experience is not required.

Child care providers are needed while parents attend counseling sessions. Child care is needed during evening hours.

Volunteers are also needed to staff a help line and to assist at events.

Neighbor Ride needs volunteer drivers

Neighbor Ride, a volunteer-based supplemental transportation program for Howard County seniors ages 60 and older, has an immediate need for volunteer drivers.

Daytime, evening and weekend drivers are needed.
