Miller library offers programs for kids

November's children's classes at the Miller branch library will include a 30-minute "Picture Book Parade" for ages 2 to 5 with an adult at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesdays, and 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays (except Nov. 21). Tickets for the program of stories and songs are available at the children's desk 30 minutes before each session.

"Superfriends Twist & Shout," a program of stories and activities for children ages 3 to 5 with an adult, will be held at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Nov. 5, and 2 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Nov. 14, at the library. Costumes are welcome, and registration begins Oct. 29.

A 45-minute "Chapter Chats Bookclub" for children ages 8-11 is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Nov. 6 and 27. Registration begins Oct. 30.

"Superhero Science," a chance for children ages 6 to 9 to unmask the secrets behind some well-known superheroes, will be offered at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 15 and at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 19, when Howard County schools are to close early. Registration begins Nov. 8.

Master Gardeners to discuss grasses

Master Gardeners will speak about "Pretty Grasses for Your Garden" at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Miller branch library.

Homework help offered at library

The Elkridge branch library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, will offer help with homework or research projects for students ages 11 to 14 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5. Snacks will be provided. Registration begins tomorrow.

"Cards for Our Troops," a chance for teens, ages 11 and older, to create holiday cards to express their gratitude to servicemen and women, is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 17. Materials and snacks will be provided. Registration begins Nov. 3.

The Elks Parent-Teen Book Club for ages 11 to 17 will discuss Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Elkridge branch. Books are available at the branch. Parents are welcome. Registration is not needed.

Design talks -- Gallery 44, 9469 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, is holding a "Dessert & Design" series of talks on interior design to benefit Success in Style, an Ellicott City nonprofit organization that provides free business attire to disadvantaged women seeking employment. The talks are held from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Today's topic is "What's New in Window Design." The cost is $10 a session. Reservations: 410-465-5200.

Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English conversation club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

Laughter therapy -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor "Laughter - The Best Medicine" for ages 55 and older from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday and Oct. 31 at the Kiwanis Wallas Recreation Center in Ellicott City. Laughter-based exercises are said to strengthen the immune system, lower blood pressure and promote emotional healing. The program is not based on joke-telling. Knitting for charity -- A community-service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. 410-313-7279.

Line dancing -- A Beginner Plus Country Line Dancing class for ages 55 and older is offered at Ellicott City Senior Center from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, through Nov. 21. Wear leather-soled shoes (no sneakers) to the class. There is a fee. 410-313-7279.
