One man was killed early yesterday and another Thursday in incidents during which Baltimore police officers were close enough to see or hear gunshots, authorities said.

Aout 2 a.m. yesterday in South Baltimore, a police officer on patrol in the Brooklyn neighborhood heard gunfire. Directed to the 4200 block of Audrey Ave., the officer found a man in the driver's seat of a Ford Explorer suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Police did not release the man's name.

Thursday's fatal shooting occurred about 2 p.m. in the 1800 block of Walbrook Ave. Police officers who were in the area responding to an unrelated call saw a man chasing another man and firing a handgun at him, police said.

Bullets struck the victim twice in the chest, police said.

The victim's name was not released,.

The officers chased a suspect, who jumped into a silver Acura sedan that was being driven by another man. The car sped away, but police said they stopped the vehicle several blocks away in an alley in the 1500 block of Dukeland St.

Two men in the car were arrested and charged in the shooting, police said. Their names were not immediately available, but police said that both men had been charged with first-degree murder, assault and weapons-related charges.

The victim was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

The killings raised the number of homicides to 243 in Baltimore this year, compared with 220 for the same period last year, according to police figures.
