Acquisitions

Phillips Edison & Co. , a Baltimore-based owner of strip shopping centers, acquired Northgate Plaza shopping center in Waxahachie, Texas. The 196,590-square- foot property is the firm's third acquisition in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Phillips Edison owns and manages 221 shopping centers in 34 states.

Awards

The International Regional Magazine Association awarded two gold and three silver medals to Chesapeake Life magazine, published by Alter Communications, for excellence in journalism, photography and design.

Susan Snyder, president of Annapolis-based RiverWest Marketing, and Leslie Shreve, president and chief executive of Focus Consulting LLC of Baltimore received Top 100 Minority Business Enterprise Awards from the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.

Franklin Woods Center, a 112-bed skilled nursing facility in northeast Baltimore County, received a 2007 Step I Quality Award for long-term nursing care from the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living.

Theresa Arnove, associate director of human resources for the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, received a SHERO Award for her community volunteer efforts from the Women and Philanthropy Collaborative.

PR News named Warschawski its national Small Firm of The Year for the second consecutive year.

Karen H. Rothenberg, dean of the law school at the University of Maryland, received the 2007 Dean John R. Kramer Award from Equal Justice Works for her nurturing a spirit of public service at the school.

Foundations

The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has provided a $1.5 million grant to the Mayor's Office of Employment Development, to support the Youth Opportunity program covering the period from September 2007 to the end of June 2009.

New business

Nicole Germain has opened MJG Communications, a public relations and marketing firm, in Ellicott City. The firm will exclusively serve nonprofits.

Openings

Park Place Annapolis, a 12-acre, $250 million complex of condominium residences, shops, restaurants, office buildings and hotel, is now open at Westgate Circle, West Street and Taylor Avenue.

Party City opened a store at The Shoppes at Hagerstown, at 18061 Garland Groh Blvd.

The McLean Group, an independent investment bank, expanded into the Baltimore area with an office at 215 E. Lexington St. McClean has 22 offices nationwide.

Catonsville-based Erickson Retirement Communities announced the opening of its newest retirement community, Tallgrass Creek in Overland Park, Kan.

Hogan Companies, an Annapolis-based land and commercial real estate broker and consultant, has opened a Carolinas Division which will operate from offices in Charlotte, N.C.

Organizations

Melina Davis-Martin has been named president and chief executive officer of the American Lung Association of the Atlantic Coast Inc. The organization is the result of the associations in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, and will have offices in Hunt Valley, Richmond and Raleigh.

The American Cancer Society named John E. Lazar senior vice president for the Maryland, Delaware/Delmarva, National Capitol regions.

Gary Lane has been named as the director of finance for the Pikesville-based UCP of Central Maryland, a nonprofit that serves people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

Relocation

Systems Security Services announced that the integrated security solutions and consulting firm has moved to the Howard County Center for Business and Technology Development.
