NAACP to hold fund banquet

Carroll County NAACP Branch 7014 will hold a Freedom Fund Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Martin's Westminster.

Lea Gilmore, internationally known blues and jazz performer and a former board member of Common Ground on the Hill, will be the speaker.

She lectures often on the history of African-American music, civil and human rights, and the historical and contemporary roles of women in blues and gospel music.

Commission on Aging has vacancy

The Carroll County commissioners are seeking resumes and letters of interest from the Manchester area for a vacancy to the Commission on Aging.

The commission's responsibilities include: advising and suggesting direction for the Bureau of Aging, prioritizing programs, developing positions on legislation and advising the county commissioners on policy, program and fiscal decisions.

The commission is a 15-member group, and each member serves a three-year term. The term for this vacancy will begin Jan. 1.

Candidates sought for holiday tree

Carroll County government will erect a holiday tree in front of the County Office Building in December.

To be considered, spruce or fir trees should be 20 to 30 feet tall, straight, full and easy for crews to access. A committee will select the tree to be displayed.

To kick off the holiday season, a tree-lighting ceremony will be held the first week of December. School choruses or bands interested in performing, or any group willing to provide hot chocolate mix or cookies, are needed.

Anyone with a tree or wanting to help with the tree lighting should contact the Office of Public Information at 410-386-2973 by 4 p.m. Friday.

Democrats elect new county officers

The Carroll County Democratic Central Committee recently elected new officers for 2007-2008.

They are Martin Radinsky, Eldersburg, chairman; Robert Mitchell, Taneytown, vice chairman; David O'Callaghan, Finksburg, treasurer; Kelly Buie, Taneytown, secretary.

The Carroll County Democratic Central Committee is elected by the registered Democratic voters of Carroll County every four years during the gubernatorial primary election. It meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Westminster Senior Center on Stoner Avenue. All meetings are open to the public.
