Patuxent Valley 8th-graders ready for liftoff

Eighth-graders at Patuxent Valley Middle School, 9151 Vollmerhausen Road, Jessup, will launch rockets they built as part of their study of forces and motion.

The school's third Rocket Day will be held tomorrow in the fields behind the school. The launches will be between noon and 2:15 p.m. The rain date for the event is Tuesday.

Visitors are asked to check in at the school's main office to obtain a visitor's badge before going to the field to watch the launch.

Historical Society to meet tomorrow

The Savage Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Faith & Ministry Center, 9032 Baltimore St., Savage. Those who attend are asked to use the side entrance off Foundry Street.

Galen R. Menne, the society's president, will speak about "Joshua Barney: Savage's Hero Not Forgotten."

Holiday crafts -- The South Laurel Recreation Council is accepting applications from artists and artisans for the 32nd holiday craft fair, to be held Nov. 11 at the Deerfield Run Elementary School and Community Center in Laurel. Artists and artisans can display, demonstrate, accept commissions and sell their work. Refreshments, bake sales, lunch and door prizes are also planned. Vera Bradley bingo -- The Ladies Auxiliary of the Savage Volunteer Fire Company will hold a Vera Bradley bingo at 7 p.m. Saturday at the fire hall, 8925 Lincoln St., Savage. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. Admission is $15 in advance; $17 at the door, if tickets are available. Twenty games and door prizes are included; two jackpot games are extra. Helping hand -- The North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center, a cooperative center created by local nonprofit organizations for residents in the southeastern county, has expanded to include counseling, legal assistance, information and referral, immigrant services and assistance with food, energy and housing.
