McDaniel College will sponsor its 13th annual German-American Day on Tuesday for middle and high school students, their teachers, families and friends.
The ethnic celebration commemorating the achievements of German-Americans has been formally observed in the U.S. since 1987. About 1,000 people from 27 area schools are expected to attend the all-day event.
Workshops will be offered throughout the day from professors, German students, professionals from the community, and the Austrian, Swiss and Liechtenstein embassies.
Classes include, "How I Survived the Holocaust," "Scherenschnitte: The Art of Paper Cutting Silhouettes," "Make Your Own Marzipan" and "The Art of Cheese Making with Samples to Taste." New courses include "VW Commercials from 1988 to the Present" and "Fantasy Faces - The Art of Face Painting."
Middle school program on safety
Oklahoma Road Middle School will present a safety program to the community at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria, 6300 Oklahoma Road, Eldersburg.
George Butler, a drug investigator, and Sgt. Brad Brown, both from the Carroll County State's Attorney's Office, will discuss ways for parents to keep their children safe. Butler will address current drug trends, and Brown is an expert on Internet safety.
Career center to hold open house
The Carroll County Career and Technology Center will hold an open house from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at 1229 Washington Road, Westminster.
Students and parents can meet with representatives from the tech center's many business partnerships, tour the campus and meet faculty, staff and students. Visitors also may explore post-secondary opportunities with college representatives and learn how to earn college credit through programs at the center.
The center offers programs in these fields: Allied Health Careers, Auto Service Technology, Carpentry, Collision Repair, Computer Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Diesel Technology (HEAT), Drafting, Electrical Construction, Emergency Services Technology, Engineering (Project Lead The Way), Floral Design, HVAC, Landscape Design and Construction, Machine Technology, Masonry, Print Production, Technical Support and Networking, Textiles and Fashion Careers, Video Production, and Welding.
Public schools to be closed Friday
Carroll County Public Schools will be closed Friday for students and for 10-month staff for professional meetings.
Workshop on effective advocacy
The Carroll County Partners for Success Center and Parents Place of Maryland will sponsor an Effective Advocacy Workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Carroll Springs School, 495 S. Center St., Westminster.
The workshop will offer positive advocacy strategies. Parents can better advocate for their child's success with the proper skills and knowledge.
The workshop will review applicable laws, procedural safeguards, when to request a resolution session, when to file for due process, how to file a complaint.
Registration is required by Friday.
