Community blood drive set at interfaith center

East Columbia

October 14, 2007

A community blood drive is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way. The Red Cross has announced that donations are urgently needed.

In addition, a bone marrow registration drive will be held at the same location from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Names of potential donors, who need only submit to a swab from the inner cheek to determine their type, will be added to the National Marrow Registry.

Donors must be between 18 and 60 years old to join the registry. Those who do will be contacted if they are a potential match for someone in need of a transplant.

Members of minority groups are especially needed. Federal funding is available to pay for some tissue-typing and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia has raised money to pay for tissue-typing for 25 registrants.

Information: Nuzhat Sayyida, 410-949-7917; or Debbie Matherly, 410-917-3190. For information on joining the marrow registry: www.marrow.org.
