HCC offering test preparation

Harford Community College is offering the Certified Information Systems Security Professional Certification from 6 p.m. to 10:10 p.m. Mondays Oct. 15 to Dec. 17 at the Higher Education Center @ HEAT in Aberdeen.

The test-preparation class will teach students what they need to know to succeed on the CISSP Certification Examination. It is intended for current information security professionals.

The certification is managed by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium/(ISC)2 to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves as experienced, knowledgeable and proficient information security practitioners.

Programs planned on magnet schools

The Harford County public schools will hold presentations on the magnet program for eighth-graders.

The Science and Mathematics Academy at Aberdeen High, the Global Studies/International Baccalaureate Programme at Edgewood High and the 19 career programs at Harford Technical High in Bel Air will be showcased in a video by Harford Cable Network.

This week's meetings are at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at Fallston High School and Tuesday at North Harford Middle School.

Counselors, HCC to hold program

Counselors at Harford County public schools, in cooperation with the admission office of Harford Community College, will present "Education After High School," a program for students and parents, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the college's Susquehanna Center.

Representatives from post-secondary institutions and career programs will be available.

Foundation's gala to honor top teachers

The Greater Edgewood Foundation Inc. will hold its third annual Gala and Silent Auction Wednesday at the Richlin Ballroom.

Six outstanding teachers from the Edgewood area will be given Everyday Heroes Award, and foundation programs and student achievements will be honored.

Sponsorships are still available for the gala. Tickets are $50.

Bookstore to hold event for educators

The Barnes & Noble bookstore in Bel Air will hold a reception for educators from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and their supervisory staffs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday as part of Celebrate Educators Month.

The event will feature giveaways, special offers, presentations on new books for the classroom and speakers. Educators can learn about the store's programs for schools and teachers, including fundraisers, school tours and story times.

Several educators will perform at the event, and author Rick Riordan will visit.

Highlands School plans open house

Highlands School, which moved into a new building for the start of the school year, will hold an open house from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The school is at 2409 Creswell Road, Bel Air.

The kindergarten-through-eighth-grade for children with learning differences has a capacity of 125 students. Students have such language processing disorders as dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Classrooms are designed for small-group instruction.
