A 27-year-old man was fatally stabbed yesterday at the Baltimore City Detention Center, a Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman said.

The man was attacked in a walkway area at 12:15 p.m. and taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died, said spokesman Mark Vernarelli.

Officials were not releasing the victim's name until they notified his relatives. The Baltimore resident was in custody while awaiting trial on drug distribution charges, Vernarelli said.

The department's Internal Investigation Unit was searching the institution for witnesses, he said.

The main section of the detention center was locked down after the stabbing, said corrections spokesman Rick Binetti.

Yesterday's stabbing follows a Sept. 23 incident at the East Baltimore facility in which three inmates were stabbed during a fight. All survived.

Because the facility is state property, yesterday's fatal stabbing does not count as a Baltimore homicide, said Agent Donny Moses, a spokesman for the city Police Department.
