Savage fire company's open house is Saturday

The Savage Volunteer Fire Company will hold an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine.

Visitors will have a chance to learn about safety and try out fire equipment, enjoy snacks and a picnic. A CPR demonstration, drug-awareness programs, and equipment not usually seen by children will be displayed and demonstrated in interactive ways. Children will have an opportunity to try 911 telephones, answer questions that might be asked in case of an emergency, and examine smoke detectors.

A smoke trailer, where children can experience a mock fire along with the firemen, is planned. There will be a demonstration of techniques for a car demolition, to be used in case of an accident or car fire.

Vera Bradley bingo at Savage fire hall

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Savage Volunteer Fire Company will hold a Vera Bradley bingo at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the fire hall, 8925 Lincoln St., Savage. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m.

Admission is $15 in advance; $17 at the door, if tickets are available. Twenty games and door prizes are included; two jackpot games are extra. Seating is limited. Children are welcome when paying admission.

Refuge's Bird Walk scheduled for today

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a Bird Walk for all ages from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. today at its North Tract, on Route 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32.

Participants can search for birds in several refuge habitats on the guided hike. Field guides and binoculars are recommended.
