A day of bicycling, food, displays and demonstrations

The 17th annual TanDemo/BentEvent, a day of bicycle rides, food, displays and demonstrations, will be held today at Mount Airy Bicycles, 4540 Old National Pike, Mount Airy.

Cyclists will have a chance to ride on country roads that range from 6.8 to 38 miles. Rides are to start at 10 a.m. Demonstrations are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m.

Visitors can try out recumbent and tandem bicycles and adult tricycles. Special-needs equipment, accessories and apparel will be on display.

Items and donations will be collected for Bikes for the World (http:--www.bikesfortheworld. org), a nonprofit organization collecting bicycles for Third World countries.

Free food will be provided by Viets Aroma restaurant of Frederick. The caterers arrive at noon. Visitors are welcome to stay and eat as long as they like. A swap meet and flea market are planned; space is free for interested cyclists.

"It's kind of a thank you to all the people that have been riding bicycles, no matter where they got them," said Larry Black, founder of Mount Airy Bicycles.

Farm to offer hayrides, pumpkins

Sharp's at Waterford Farm, 4003 Jennings Chapel Road, Brookeville, will offer free hayrides and opportunities to pick pumpkins in its fields Saturday and Oct. 14.

Gourds, squash, specialty pumpkins, Indian corn and popcorn are also grown at the farm and will be available.

An educational corn maze, nature trail, observation beehives, farm museum, fresh apple cider, scarecrow-making, face painting and a country store will also be available.

The farm will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 31.

Glenwood center incentive program set

The Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville, is sponsoring a Fitness Passholder Incentive Program during the last 100 days of 2007.

Under the terms of the promotion, a weekly prize will be given as an incentive to a passholder chosen from those who used the facility during the week. Winners will be posted on a "Big 100" board in the lobby.

A grand-prize winner will receive a 50-visit pass at the end of the program, Dec. 31.

The center will hold a Holiday Vendor Fair, featuring products from several companies, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17.

Vendors pay $20 a space and an additional $5 for the use of a 6-foot table. Admission is $4 for shoppers ages 13 and older; $1 for ages 3 to 12.

Around Town

Roundabout -- Construction of a roundabout at Brighton Dam Road and Ten Oaks Road in Clarksville is continuing. Traffic on both roads will be maintained during construction, with flagging operations to direct motorists. Message boards and signs will be posted to advise motorists about the construction. The project is expected to be completed by spring, weather permitting.
