Hearing to be held on variance request

Acting as hearing officer on behalf of the county commissioners, Steven D. Powell will hold a hearing on a request for a variance from Chapter 115, Forest Conservation, at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 in Room 311 of the County Office Building, 225 N. Center St., Westminster.

Specifically, the county has requested a variance for a timber harvest of 6 acres of forest at the Carroll County Regional Airport. The county did submit a Forest Stewardship Management Plan to the State Forestry Board, which approved the management plan for the incorporation of applicable Best Management Practices.

However, the board did not approve the timber harvest because that requires a post harvest basal area of 70 square feet when timbering in areas set aside for a forest conservation easement. The proposed clear cut would result in a post harvest basal area of only 25 square feet.

Other Federal Aviation Administration regulations also are required for the safety of those using the airport.

Copies of the variance request on are at ccgovernment.carr.org or through Cindy Parr at 410-386-2043.
