A city police officer shot and wounded a man who had been chasing and firing a gun at another man yesterday afternoon on a Southeast Baltimore street, police officials said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital with a nonlife-threatening wound to the shoulder, said Sterling Clifford, a city police spokesman. Clifford declined to identify the man or the officer involved in the shooting.

Police were preparing to file criminal charges against the man last night.

The incident began about 5 p.m. when an officer on patrol heard gunfire in the 2300 block of Orleans St. The officer saw a man running around the corner and being chased by another, who was shooting at him, Clifford said.

The gunman refused the officer's orders to put the weapon down, Clifford said.

"The officer, in order to protect himself and the other people in the area, fired at the suspect," said Clifford, adding that he did not know whether the suspect pointed his gun at the officer.

The other man in the incident was in police custody and talking with officers, Clifford said.
