Childbirth course lasts six weeks

Upper Chesapeake Health will offer a six-week course in prepared childbirth from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays Oct. 1 to Nov. 19 and Thursdays Oct. 25 to Dec. 13 in Chesapeake Conference Center I.

Weekend classes will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 6-7 and 20-21.

The cost is $50 for couples delivering at Upper Chesapeake and $80 for those delivering elsewhere.

Information offered on bariatric surgery

Upper Chesapeake Health is offering a free informational class, Bariatric Surgery: New Course for Life, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Havre de Grace Room at Harford Memorial Hospital.

Participants can determine whether the surgery is right for them.

Lecture Tuesday on car seat safety

The Upper Chesapeake Family Birthplace will hold a car seat safety lecture from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Maryland Room.

Parents will learn the proper way to install a child safety seat and what seat is right for their child.

Prostate cancer support group

Upper Chesapeake Medical Center will hold a Man to Man Prostate Support Group at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Fallston Room.

Men who have received diagnoses of prostate cancer and their families are welcome.

Sports medicine center to open

Upper Chesapeake Orthopedics Center for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation will open Wednesday in the new Walter and Betty Ward YMCA, 101 Walter Ward Blvd. in Abingdon.

Owned and operated by Upper Chesapeake Health, the new center will offer services for adults and children that focus on rehabilitation, exercise, and physical and mental well-being.

Rehabilitative services will be provided through a team of orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, and physical and occupational therapists.

The center's physicians - D. Burke Haskins, William Cook, Edward O'Mara and Sean Curtin - and orthopedic and sports medicine trained physical and occupational therapists will provide services for overuse injuries, muscle strains and sprains, back and neck pain, arthritis, chronic pain, post-surgical repair of orthopedic injuries, joint-replacement rehabilitation and performance enhancement for injured athletes.

Walk-in appointments for physician consultations will be available during scheduled hours, or appointments may be scheduled.

Wellness center offers screenings

Upper Chesapeake Healthlink's Community Wellness Center offers free blood pressure, sleep disorder and body composition screenings.

Also available are cholesterol screenings for $10, osteoporosis screenings for $15 and cardiac risk assessments for $20 (cash or check only).

No appointments are necessary. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Wednesday.

The center will move in October, so call before going for a screening.

`Dining with Docs' set for Wednesday

Upper Chesapeake Health will hold a "Dining with Docs" dinner, lecture and discussion at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Upper Chesapeake Medical Center's Chesapeake Conference Center.

Dr. Marianne Cloeren will discuss Lyme disease.
