FOR MORE LUXURIOUS ZZZs

September 30, 2007|By [ LIZ ATWOOD]

About 70 million Americans have problems sleeping, according to the National Institutes of Health. Maybe that's why the bedding industry has become big business. Mattress makers are devising all sorts of beds with the latest technology to help us get some much-needed rest. Here are some of the new standouts:

1. Dormia Cool Top Mattress

Price:

$1,999

Where to get it:

Sleepy's, Joanne's Bed and Back, and Healthy Back retail stores in the Baltimore area, and at dormiadirect.com

Why we like it:

Jessup-based Dormia is the nation's leading seller of specialty mattresses and bedding products. This mattress is made from fabrics that dissipate heat and is designed to offer a cooler, more comfortable sleep.

2. Magniflex gold and sterling silver mattresses

Price:

$24,000 for the gold; $3,999 for the sterling silver queen size

Where to get it:

Healthy Back stores in Rockville and Bethesda

Why we like it:

Made in Italy, the gold mattress is covered with 24-carat gold yarn, which resists bacteria and, the manufacturer says, helps relieve stress. The sterling silver mattress fights bacteria and is anti-static.

3. Vivetique "EcoDream" mattress

Price:

$4,999 in queen size

Where to get it:

In select 1-800-Mattress showrooms or online at 1800mattress.com

Why we like it:

This mattress is designed for the environmentally conscious sleeper. It is made from natural latex, wrapped in organic cotton and comes with an eco-friendly wood foundation.
