Yankees update

New York beat Tampa Bay on Wednesday to guarantee itself at least the American League wild card and a 13th straight playoff appearance. That is one shy of the record set by the Atlanta Braves from 1991 to 2005. The Yankees had been 9 1/2 games back in the wild-card standings after play July 7. They have won 16 of their past 21 games and, with last night's victory and Red Sox loss, they stand two games behind Boston with three to play in the AL East. Alex Rodriguez's grand slam Tuesday made him just the fourth player in Yankees history to drive in 150 or more runs in a season. Roger Clemens (hamstring) has been shut down until the playoffs. Relievers Mariano Rivera and Joba Chamberlain have allowed two earned runs in 29 innings this month. The Orioles are 8-7 against the Yankees this season. They haven't beaten them in a season series since 1997.
