Surgical nurse

Rene W. Keating, a retired surgical nurse, died Sunday of cancer at her Cockeysville home. She was 67.

Born Rene James Wilhelm in Palmerton, Pa., she was a 1961 graduate of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing.

She worked at New York University Downstate Medical Center-Kings County Hospital, where she assisted in early open-heart operations in the 1960s.

Mrs. Keating moved to Cockeysville and worked at Children's Hospital on Greenspring Avenue and its Center for Reconstructive Surgery from 1972 to 1998. She was assistant director of nursing and operating room nurse manager.

During her tenure at Children's, Mrs. Keating traveled with a medical team to Ecuador to perform plastic surgery on children with facial deformities.

After retiring, Mrs. Keating volunteered at Shepherd's Clinic on Kirk Avenue and helped provide health care to the needy. She was also a volunteer at Warren Elementary School near her home.

She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and knitted numerous baby blankets for family members and friends.

Services were held Tuesday in Timonium.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Anthony Laurance Keating; two sons, Andrew Lawrence Keating of Brookeville and Peter James Keating of Sugar Land, Texas; a brother, William James Wilhelm of Dundalk; a sister, Jean Wilhelm Heiney of Coopersburg, Pa.; and four grandchildren. A son, Paul James Keating, died as an infant in 1968.
