Free screenings available at health expo

The Southeast Horizon Council and the Howard County Health Department will hold their fifth Family Health Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Murray Hill Middle School, 9989 Winter Sun Road, North Laurel.

The event is designed to provide access to Howard County's health and human service providers for local residents.

Free blood pressure, dental, vision, hearing, HIV and breast health screenings are planned. A limited number of eyeglasses and hearing aids will be available. A Health Department representative will provide nasal flu vaccine to qualified children, ages 5 to 18.

Information will be available on health programs and local health and human service providers.

The Balloon Man will entertain children; door prizes and giveaways are planned. Free lunches will be provided.

Participating organizations include the Domestic Violence Center, Family and Children's Services of Central Maryland, Foreign-born Information and Referral Network (FIRN), Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, the Howard County Library, Howard County Office on Aging, and Legal Aid.

Interpreters will be available.

Admission is free. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Southeast Horizon Council advises The Horizon Foundation about community concerns in the North Laurel and Savage areas and makes recommendations about ways to address these problems.

The Horizon Foundation is committed to helping build a healthy community in Howard County.

ArtJam festival today in Savage

ArtJam, a festival of art, music and family entertainment at Savage Mill, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. today.

Crafts, paintings, collage art, hand-crafted guitars and other art and craft items will be for sale.

Demonstrations and music are planned.

Boating safety course offered

Flotilla 24 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will present a three-day boating course leading to the award of a boating safety education certificate. A written examination is required to receive the certificate.

The course will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. tomorrow, 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the multipurpose room at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 13611 Laurel-Bowie Road, Laurel.

Tuition is free; there is a fee of $40 for materials, which includes a textbook, workbook and compact disc. Registration is required.

Writers' group to meet at library

The Writer's Circle at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, will meet to share original writing with other aspiring authors at 7 p.m. Oct. 15.
