Global warming theory predicts higher temperatures, plus more extreme precipitation and drought. For the record: June-August 2007 was the sixth-warmest since 1895 in the continental U.S., the seventh-warmest globally, according to the National Climate Data Center. The summer was the hottest ever in Utah and Nevada, and ranked in the top 10 in 11 other states. By the end of August, drought affected 46 percent of the lower 48. It was the driest summer on record in North Carolina.
