FALL WILL BE HERE IN A COUPLE WEEKS, AND WITH the change of season comes the transformation of the foliage. For those who plan to take the trek to see the robust colors, take a look at some newer and / or lesser-known Internet foliage resources that can take you further afield -- and answer questions like, "Why do the leaves change?"

MTV SPAIN Frommer's / Wiley / $22.99

Since MTV's founding, the cable network has expanded beyond music to emphasize pop culture generally and youth culture specifically. As expected, the MTV travel guides emphasize a glib, loose and irreverent attitude, yet with ample doses of perceptive reporting. The authors' "best of Spain" choices are indicative of the things that appeal to the young: the best places to drink, best cheap sleeps, best ways "to blow your money" and the best ways to get your blood pumping (sky diving in the Pyrenees or kite-surfing in Tarifa). The "Cuidado! (Watch Out)" boxes warn against faux pas or serve as reminders of what to do in an uncomfortable situation. The Culture Tips 101 boxes also go a long way toward making your trip a pleasurable one.

CARS

Hertz simplifies renting wheels

Hertz is rolling out Simply Wheelz by Hertz, which says it offers "faster, easier and more affordable access" to rental cars. You reserve online and use self-service kiosks to complete the transaction after you arrive. Some caveats: You can't rent specialty models or get frequent-renter perks, and you might find less-expensive rates from other companies. The program is to debut Friday at Orlando International Airport in Florida. Call 888-999-9078 or go to simplywheelz.com.

FOOTBALL

Cheer for the away team

Cheapflights.com has kicked off a new pro football travel page devoted to helping National Football League fans find the best airfare and hotel deals for away games. Go to cheap flights.com / 2007pro-football / index.html, then choose your favorite team to get its schedule and flight prices. When not included, hotel taxes and airport fees can add significantly to the price of a trip. Most prices quoted are for double occupancy; solo travelers will usually pay more. Offers are subject to availability, and there may be blackout dates.
