Q&a Corey Jubb, North Harford, Football

September 09, 2007|By Jeff Seidel | Jeff Seidel,Special To The Sun

North Harford senior Corey Jubb is a two-way lineman for North Harford, which is trying to make the playoffs for a third straight season. He is being recruited by Maryland, Towson and Delaware. Jubb, 6 feet 4 and 330 pounds, is coming back from shoulder surgery after an injury that left him playing in pain throughout most of the season. Jubb suffered the injury when he fell awkwardly on his shoulder during the Hawks' win over Joppatowne. Jubb has been on varsity since his freshman year, and coach Ken Brinkman and the Hawks are looking to him as one of their leaders.

How much is the shoulder surgery you had after last season still on your mind?

Not as much anymore. It doesn't hurt, so I don't think about it. After the games, I might think about it. It was pretty bad last year because I didn't have much use of my left arm; I pretty much played with one arm. It made it pretty hard, and I'd get frustrated with myself. That's no excuse, though.

How good is this year's team?

I think we'll have a really good year. Every team has their ups and downs. We have 23 seniors, so that'll help us.

As a senior, do you see a different role for yourself?

I'm going to step it up a lot as a leader. If I get down, then our whole team could get down, and I don't want that. I've got to help out more this year. I want us to win and get back to the playoffs again.

Will it be tougher for you this season because it's your last one in high school?

I'm sure. It's hard on every senior. You never know what's going to happen after high school. I want this to be a good year for everyone.

How hard is it going to be to pick which college you'll go to ?

It will probably be the biggest decision I make, with academics and scholarships. I want to play, so I have to see what teams need or what they don't need. If a team doesn't need a lineman for three years, I probably won't go to that school. I've been thinking about it a lot the last few years.

What will you major in at college?

I'm thinking of physical education. I want to coach football or teach gym and weight training.

What kind of music do you like, and who's your favorite?

I like country music. My favorite is Keith Urban. I just like the way his music sounds.

What's in your iPod now?

Believe it or not, I don't have one now. I just listen on the radio. That's good enough for me.

What's your hobby away from football?

I love hunting and fishing. I've been doing it since I could walk. I do deer hunting, goose hunting, duck hunting. I go every weekend during football season. I go to Rock Hall on the Eastern Shore. My dad and my brother and I leave after the football game is over Friday night and head out. We get there around midnight or so and get up at 4 a.m. or 5 a.m. the next day to get started. We come back Sunday afternoon.
