Ramsdell, Col. Samuel Carter

September 05, 2007

Col. Samuel "Sam" Carter Ramsdell, age 90, of Lancaster, PA, formerly of Churchville, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at Willow Valley Retirement Communities. Sam was born in Philadelphia, PA, to Gardner Carter Ramsdell and Florence Palmer Ramsdell. Before joining the Army, Sam worked in the family insurance business of Ramsdell and Ramsdell, and entered the banking industry as an accountant. Colonel Ramsdell was an Army veteran of World War II, was called back to active service and stationed in Germany for 3 years. After completing his Active Duty, Sam continued his service in the Reserves. Upon returning to the United States, he worked as a Comptroller at Aberdeen Proving Ground until his retirement. Sam went back to college and received a Masters in Accounting from the University of Maryland in 1962. The family moved to Darlington, MD in 1956 and then to Churchville the following year. Sam and Edna joined Deer Creek Harmony Presbyterian Church where Sam served as Treasurer for 32 years. While keeping their membership there, they started attending Strasburg First Presbyterian Church in 1994 after their move from Churchville to Willow Valley. Sam was always a huge sports fan. He especially enjoyed being a "practice catcher" for the Philadelphia Athletics, taking pitches from Lefty Grove. Always a lover of children, he coached t-ball to help kids start their sports lives and volunteered for many years at Children's Hospital in Baltimore. Sometimes called "Silent Sam", his actions spoke for him and he was always known as a loving husband, father, grandfather and a gentleman. Sam is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Ungerer Ramsdell, 3 children, Lawrence D. Ramsdell of Denver, CO, Harvey A. Ramsdell of Reiserstown, MD, and Beverly R. Fawcett of Middletown, DE, 5 grandchildren, Jeff, Allison, David and Kate Ramsdell, and Bradford Fawcett. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Sam's life, Saturday, September 8th at 11:00 AM at Willow Valley North in the Johnson Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, 100 Witherspoon St., Louisville, KY 40202-1396. Fred F. Groff, Inc. www.lifecelebrationcom
