Glenwood Writer's Group to meet Sept. 25 at library

The Glenwood Writer's Group will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Glenwood library branch, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville.

Writers are invited to help others and be helped to craft prose and find outlets for publication of their work. Participants are invited to bring a nonfiction writing sample of up to 1,000 words.

Military

Completes training -- Navy Seaman Recruit Sarah M. Garnett, granddaughter of Aubrey E. and Catherine A. Joines of Woodbine, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2006 graduate of South Carroll High School, Sykesville.

Mobilized -- Army National Guard Staff Sgt. George E. Brosenne, son of Paul V. and Bong Cha Brosenne of Woodbine, has been mobilized for a future deployment to an undisclosed overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the official name given to efforts to secure Iraq. He is a 1995 graduate of Glenelg High School.

Around Town

Flea market -- Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville, will hold a Children's Flea Market from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday on the building's side parking lot. Children, parents and grandparents are invited to clean out toy boxes, closets and garages, and sell or swap the contents. Outgrown clothing, toys, bikes, books, music, games and handmade crafts are welcome. Space will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required a week before the event. The cost is $20, plus $5 for the use of a 6-foot table. Admission is free to shoppers. 410-313-4840.

Community yard sale -- The River Hill Community Association will sponsor a Community Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 15, rain or shine. The association will advertise the event and place signs in the community the day before the sale. Participating streets will be listed in local newspapers. Ribbons will be distributed for the street signs of participating streets. A local charity collection truck will be available at the River Hill Pool from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 15 to dispose of items not sold. Household items that have to be installed and metal desks will not be accepted. All electrical items must be in good condition. Those interested in participating should contact the village office (410-531-1749) by Sept. 10.

Drawing classes -- KidzArt, a fine-arts education program for children, is organizing fall drawing classes for home-schoolers in Columbia and western Howard County. The six-week sessions for ages 5 to 11 begins the week of Sept. 17 at Kahler Hall in the Harper's Choice Village Center and Gethsemane Baptist Church, 14135 Burntwoods Road, Glenwood. The program is not affiliated with the church. Classes at Gethsemane will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 20, 27 and Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25. Classes at Kahler Hall will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 19, 26 and Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24. The cost is $70 for the six-class series, with a $5 discount for siblings. Professional-grade artist materials are used. A parent helper assists the teacher in each class. Documentation is provided to home-schooling parents. Vicki Harvey, 410-531-0315.

La Leche -- La Leche League of Western Howard County, a chapter of the international organization, meets from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month at Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church, 12101 Linden-Linthicum Lane, Clarksville.
