An Anne Arundel County police officer directing traffic at a busy Arnold intersection was injured when his patrol car was struck by a car driven by a Glen Burnie woman, police said yesterday.
Cpl. Joseph Larkin Jr., a 19-year veteran of the force, suffered back and neck injuries when his car was hit about 10:45 p.m. Saturday by a 2001 Ford Focus driven by the 23-year-old woman, police said.
Larkin was at Route 2 and Arnold Road, where the traffic signal was not working. He was in his patrol car when Sarah Kathryn Aaron's car slammed into the back of it.
Police said Aaron told them that she hadn't applied her brakes before hitting the car.
She suffered minor injuries and was treated at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Larkin was treated and released from Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Both cars were heavily damaged.
A blood sample from Aaron will be analyzed as part of the investigation. No charges have been filed.
The crash occurred two weeks after another county police officer was struck by a car. Officer Alex Swartz was writing a ticket for drunken driving on a Crofton road late Aug. 11 when his cruiser was sideswiped by another car. Its driver was suspected of drunken driving, police said.
