Five Questions For Maryland

August 27, 2007|By HEATHER A. DINICH

Will Jordan Steffy keep the starting quarterback job? Coach Ralph Friedgen has praised Steffy after nearly every practice this summer, but Steffy has thrown an interception in all but one scrimmage, and fans have been eagerly awaiting Florida transfer Josh Portis.

Will the lack of depth on the offensive line be a factor? Friedgen isn't concerned with his first-string players, but after them he is dealing with two walk-ons and players with limited game experience. Staying healthy is critical here.

How successful can the one-two punch of running backs Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore be? The duo combined for 1,558 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns last season, and should help to open things up in the passing game.

Will Maryland return to a bowl game? Much of the Terps' success this season hinges on how their quarterback fares. If that position comes together, the pieces appear in place for another postseason appearance.

Will the defense be any better? It should be, because the team has had a season to adjust under coordinator Chris Cosh, and six starters return.
