Ulman, O'Malley at Hammond High

County Executive Ken Ulman and Gov. Martin O'Malley will visit Hammond High School at noon Tuesday to hear students' comments and concerns during the first week of school.

School Superintendent Sydney L. Cousin, Principal Sterlind S. Burke, members of the Principal's Student Advisory Committee and other state and county officials are expected to be on hand.

The guests plan to have lunch with students, who will be encouraged to discuss the education they are receiving or any other education-related issues.

Advisory council to hold meeting

The Community Advisory Council to the Board of Education will hold its first meeting of the year at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

A new-member orientation will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the same location.

The group of residents and representatives from local PTAs serves in an advisory capacity to the board.

Two newest schools open for tours today Members of the community are invited to tour Howard County's two newest schools today.

Veterans Elementary School, 4355 Montgomery Road, Ellicott City, will hold dedication activities with parents, children and school and county officials from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The new school is intended to relieve crowding at St. John's Lane, Worthington and Northfield elementary schools.

Ribbon-cutting and an open house for the new Bushy Park Elementary School, 14601 Carrs Mill Road, Glenwood, will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The facility replaces the original school, which opened in 1976, and can accommodate 348 more children than the older facility.

Homecoming

Here are the homecoming dates for the county's public high schools:

Sept. 29:

Long Reach, Marriotts Ridge and Reservoir.

Oct. 13:

Atholton, Hammond, Mount Hebron, River Hill and Wilde Lake.

Oct. 20:

Oakland Mills.

Oct. 27:

Centennial, Glenelg and Howard.
