Registration is open for middle school study-skills courses

Registration is open for fall Stressless Tests study-skills courses for middle- schoolers, to be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 10 through Oct. 1 at Burleigh Manor Middle School.

Afternoon classes are to meet from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 11 through Oct. 2 at Burleigh Manor.

Classes for high school students will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 19 through Oct. 10 at Centennial High.

Fire Department to hold blood drive

In response to the announcement by the American Red Cross that the community blood supply is at crisis level, the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department will hold a blood drive for the Red Cross from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the fire hall, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge.

Appointments are available, and walk-ins are welcome.

The volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Bull, Oyster and Shrimp Feast from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 8 at the fire hall.

On the menu are roast beef, raw oysters, oyster fritters and stew, steamed shrimp, salads, chips, sodas and beer.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Additional parking is to be available at the Norbel School, farther down the street. A shuttle will be available to the fire hall.

Tickets are $40 a person.

Fire Department units, marching bands, color guards, antique cars, motorcycles and community organizations are needed to participate in the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's annual parade, thanking the community for its support, to be held Oct. 6.

Teachers from 1977 to 1979 are sought

A group of former Centennial High School teachers is seeking other members of the faculty who taught at the school during its first two years: 1977-1979.

An event is being planned in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Centennial's opening.

Former teachers who were at the school during those two years are asked to e-mail Ken Katzen at KKatzen@HCPS.org, and include an address, telephone number and preferred e-mail address.

Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English conversation club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

Knitting for charity -- A community-service group meets to knit and crochet items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. 410-313-7279.

Chess club -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., will hold a chess club for ages 13 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play chess. 410-313-5077.

Pooches' party -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will present a Pooches' Pool Party, a swim event for owners and their dogs, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Roger Carter Recreation Center pool, 3676 Fels Lane, Ellicott City. Handlers must be ages 18 and older; only one dog is permitted for each handler. Those who attend must be ages 12 or older. Aggressive dogs are not permitted. Off-leash dog park rules apply.
