Two teenage boys were shot Saturday night in West Baltimore, and one later died of his wounds, city police said yesterday.

Baltimore police said the boys were walking in the 2400 block of Woodbrook Ave. about 11 p.m. when they were approached by one or more suspects, according to Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman.

At least one suspect fired at the boys as they tried to run away, Harris said. One boy, 17, was shot in the back and died about a half hour later at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The second victim was wounded in his right leg, and was also taken to Shock Trauma, where he was treated for wounds that were not life-threatening, Harris said. The second victim's age was not available.

The name of the slaying victim was not released, because police had not completed notifying next-of-kin, Harris said. He was the city's 199th homicide victim this year. Police said the city had recorded 172 homicides at this time last year.
