Seaman recruits finish basic training

Navy Seaman Recruits Sarah M. Garnett and Anthony M. Rogers recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Garnett is the granddaughter of Aubrey E. and Catherine A. Joines of Woodbine, and a 2006 graduate of South Carroll High School.

Rogers is the son of Tracy L. and Jon P. Raymond of Westminster and a 2006 graduate of Westminster High School.

Navy Reserve Seaman Kevin G. Smith, brother of Wanda Smith of Mount Airy, and a 1990 graduate of Linganore High School, also completed Navy Training in Great Lakes.

During the eight-week program, they completed training on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, shipboard and aircraft safety, and physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations," an exercise designed to give recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

Coast Guard recruits exit training center

Coast Guard Fireman Jeremy B. Ziegler, son of Mary L. Ziegler of Keymar, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.

Ziegler is a 2004 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School.

Coast Guard Seaman Shawn D. Ricketts, son of Tina M. Adams and stepson of Todd T. Adams of Taneytown, and brother of Chris M. Ricketts of Union Bridge, also graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center.

Ricketts is a 2005 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School.

During the eight-week program, they completed training in academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, firefighting, marksmanship and physical fitness, health and wellness.
