Ripken World Series Notebook

Playing in the Cal Ripken 12-and-under World Series is "a chance to be a pro for a few days," said Calvert County manager Mark Chandlee, referring to the first-class treatment the teams receive.

"I reminded my parents what a great opportunity this is, no matter how many games we win," he said.

Calvert County is in Aberdeen for the second time in three years as the Maryland state champion in the Cal Ripken division of Babe Ruth League Baseball. The Southern Maryland team defeated six opponents - four by lopsided scores - in the state tournament to earn a return trip to Cal Sr.'s Yard.

"We had 96 hits in the six games of the state tournament, but no home runs," said Chandlee, whose twin sons Adam and Joseph are .600 hitters, as are Mark Cox, Bradley Weems, Drew Lantz and Zach Call.

Call, a third baseman-pitcher, said making it to Aberdeen was the goal.

"I watched my brother [Brandon] play here in 2005 and I worked all summer to get my chance to play here," said Call, whose father, Dave Call, is an assistant coach.

Host team wins

After being routed 11-0 Saturday night by Southeast Lexington, Ky., host Emmorton of Harford County bounced back with a 3-2 victory over Sikeston, Mo., yesterday.

Sikeston had two men on in the seventh inning, but Emmorton's Ryan Katelan struck out the last batter to earn the save and give Billy Dearth a win.

Et cetera

Carlos Munoz, the left-hander batter who hit 18 homers in Friday's home run contest, was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs yesterday in Mexico's opening 6-0 win over the Dominican Republic in International Division play. ... Brett Curnow's two-out homer in the top of the sixth inning lifted Australia to a 4-3 win and spoiled Japan's debut in the series.
