Memorial walk to be held Sept. 11 at Montpelier center

The Freestate Happy Wanderers Walking Club will sponsor an afternoon 9/11 Memorial walk for all ages Sept. 11 at the Montpelier Arts Center, 9652 Muirkirk Road, Laurel.

Registration is to begin at 1 p.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Walks should be finished by 7 p.m. The 5K and 10K trails include a walk along residential sidewalks, and are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.

Commemorative buttons will be distributed while supplies last.

Wildflower Wander being held today

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a Wildflower Wander for all ages from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. today. Field guides, water and a magnifying glass are recommended. Participants can learn to identify some common species and understand the role played by wildflowers in the ecosystem.

A Bird Walk for all ages is scheduled from 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. Field guides and binoculars are recommended. An Owl Prowl for all ages will be offered from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. Participants will look and listen for owls, frogs and other nocturnal animals on the guided walk.

A refuge naturalist will lead a search for reptiles and amphibians from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19. Participants should wear good walking shoes.

The programs are free; donations to Friends of Patuxent are appreciated. Reservations are required.

A Twilight Tram Tour for all ages is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The 40-minute guided trip on an electric open-air tram will tour the refuge's wildlife habitats. Tickets are $4; $3 for those ages 55 and older; $2 for children to age 12. Participants are asked to have exact change. Reservations are required.

Collectors Fair, Auction set Aug. 25

Historic Savage Mill will be the venue for the 10th Collectors Fair and Auction, to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 25. The host is Hands of Time Clocks & Collectibles, a shop at the mill.

Door prizes, refreshments and a grand prize drawing will be offered during the promotional event.

The mill will hold its second "Art Jam at the Mill" from noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 22 to Sept. 23. Artists will talk to visitors about their work. Musicians, a caricaturist, stilt-walkers and clowns, arts and crafts workshops, face-painting and other activities are also planned. Admission is free.

The 19th-century textile mill houses antiques shops and home-furnishing stores, galleries, artists' studios, Rams Head Tavern, banquet facilities and a French bakery.
