Pooches' Pool Party is to be held Sept. 8

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will present a Pooches' Pool Party, a swim event for owners and their dogs, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Roger Carter Recreation Center pool, 3676 Fels Lane, Ellicott City.

Handlers must be ages 18 and older; only one dog is permitted for each handler. Those who attend must be ages 12 or older. Aggressive dogs are not permitted. Off-leash dog park rules apply (www.howardcountymd. gov/RAP/RAP_CheckThisOut. htm).

Participants will receive a doggy gift bag.

U.S. 40 water main installation to begin

This week, Howard County will begin routine installation of about 200 feet of 8-inch water main along westbound U.S. 40, between Pebble Drive and Turf Valley Road.

Road closures and detours during installation are not expected. If closures or detours should become necessary, signs will be posed to alert motorists. The work is expected to be completed by mid-September, weather permitting.

Military

Mobilized -- Army Spec. Phillip A. Machado, son of Abilio L. and Isabel Machado of Ellicott City, has been mobilized for a future deployment to an undisclosed overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the name given to military operations involving Iraq. The 2002 graduate of Mount Hebron High School is a rifleman with the 1st Battalion, 158th Cavalry based in Easton.

Around Town

At the library -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will sponsor "Teen 'Zine!" -- a meeting for youths ages 13 to 17 interested in working on the new online newsletter written by teens for teens -- from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the third Monday of each month (410-313-1950).

Howard County Master Gardeners will be at the Miller branch library to answer gardening questions and examine problem plants from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Residents are invited to bring questions and plants.

"Movin' Up to Middle School," a program offering survival skills, study secrets and strategies for making new friends to those entering sixth grade, will be offered for rising middle-schoolers from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Elkridge branch library (410-313- 5077).

The Miller branch will offer "DDR for Teens @HC Library," a chance to dance to the video game Dance Dance Revolution, with host Rich Suchoski, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. The program for ages 13 to 17 offers a chance to meet and compete with other DDR fans. Registration is not needed.

A program on creating a "Back-to-School Mini Journal" will be held at the Elkridge branch from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20. Materials will be provided, and registration is required. 410-313-5077.

"Pins and Needles," a chance to learn to knit and crochet or work on current projects with others, ages 11 to 17, will be offered at the Miller branch from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 20. Beginners should take a skein of yarn. Registration is required. 410-313-1950.

Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English conversation club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313- 1950.

Chess club -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., will hold a chess club for ages 13 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play chess. Snacks will be provided. Registration is not needed. 410-313- 5077.

Big step -- The Miller branch library will offer "Kindergarten, Here We Come!" -- a program of stories and activities to help young children make the transition to kindergarten in the fall. Sessions will be held at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Aug. 21 and 2 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Aug. 22. Registration, which is required, begins Tuesday. 410-313-1955.

Knitting for charity -- A community-service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. 410- 313-7279.

Meadowbrook walks -- Nurse practitioners in Howard County invite the community to walk with them in Meadowbrook Park, behind Target in Ellicott City, on the third Saturday of each month. The next walk will be held this week. The park has half-mile, one-mile and two-mile trails.
