Shuttle docks at space station

NASA discovered a worrisome gouge on Endeavour's belly soon after the shuttle docked with the International Space Station yesterday, possibly caused by ice that broke off the fuel tank one minute after liftoff. pg 3a

Congregation marks milestone

Members of Beth Jacob Congregation will celebrate their last Shabbat service today. Once the only Modern Orthodox community on Park Heights Avenue, Beth Jacob's membership has now dwindled to about 500, with about 125 regularly attending Saturday morning worship services. pg 1B

State GOP is almost broke

The Maryland Republican Party, reeling from the loss of the governor's mansion, is nearly broke, according to a copy of its financial statement obtained by The Sun. The state GOP treasurer's report from July 31 shows the party had $4,615 in cash and $50,500 in debt. pg 1B

Diverse experience at Academy

Giancarlo Alpuche looked every bit like the other 1,200 Naval Academy freshmen who reunited with family after six weeks of indoctrination. The Belize native is one of 48 international students who attend the Academy as part of a military exchange program that dates to the Civil War. pg 1B
