Tailgates start cooking

Moving the chains

Fans are filtering into M&T Bank Stadium as I type this. If you ever wanted to sit front row at an NFL event, this is your chance.

Walking through the parking lots before the game, the tailgaters look to be in midseason form. There's nothing like that smell of coffee (for those recovering from last night) mixed with Bud Light (for those looking ahead). Redskins and Ravens fans were already razzing each other as if it were December. Said one Ravens fan: "This is their Super Bowl." Ouch.

Unofficial jersey count: Todd Heap's No. 86 appears to be the most popular among Ravens fans today with Ed Reed's No. 20 a close second.

For Redskins fans, it's the No. 26 of Clinton Portis, with Sean Taylor's No. 21 also getting some love.

Did anyone hear Troy Smith on WBAL on Friday night? The former Heisman Trophy winner was asked what kind of rookie duties he has had to perform. He said Kyle Boller made him sing the Ohio State fight song. The host then asked Smith if he wanted to sing the fight song on the air, but the former Buckeyes QB said it didn't show off his vocal skills, and he preferred to sing some Earth, Wind & Fire. Great radio. Smith sounded like a guy that was loving life in the NFL, not a guy who was struggling with the rigors of his first training camp.
