Ground broken for Merkle building

Manekin LLC broke ground recently on a $32 million corporate headquarters building it is developing in Columbia for Merkle Inc., a database marketing agency.

The five-story, 120,000- square-foot Class A office building at 7001 Columbia Gateway Drive is scheduled for completion in May. Design Collective Inc. of Baltimore is the architect; Studio B2SJ is the interior-design firm; and GLW-Gutschick, Little & Weber PA of Burtonsville is the civil engineer.

The building, to be constructed of precast concrete and glass, will be on 7.7 acres that Manekin recently purchased from General Growth Properties. It will include office space for 550 employees, as well as a 10,000-square-foot data center.

A two-story glass curtain wall will extend through part of the lobby, conference rooms, cafe and other areas. Sustainable design features such as a high-efficiency HVAC system, gray roof and occupancy sensors are planned.

When the building is completed, Manekin is to sell the land and building to Merkle, which owns an adjacent 4-acre parcel and intends to construct a second building of about 70,000 square feet to accommodate an additional 350 employees.

Merkle employs more than 850 people across the country. About 350 employees work at the company's Lanham headquarters.
